The symbol of the Ouroboros, a snake or serpent eating its own tail, has been traced as far back as ancient Egypt (1,400 BC) and is found in ancient Greek esoteric traditions, Hermeticism, Gnosticism and Alchemy. Forms of the Ouroboros are also found in Indian Tantric: "...like a snake, coiled round upon herself she holds her tail in her mouth and lies resting half asleep as the base of the body." Yoga-Kundalini Upanishad.
Psychologist Carl Jung called Ouroboros "a dramatic symbol for the integration and assimilation of the opposites" and understand ancient and medieival thinkers to have used it as a symbol of the process of individuation or enlightenment.
Throughout the ages this mysterious symbol has signified eternity, the soul of the world, inner awakening, nature's endless creation, the cycle of birth and death, the unity of life, and much more.
