The word Buddha means "awakened one" and in addition to being the title of the historical Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) it also refers to the awakened potential of all of our minds and hearts. The Eyes of the Buddha are also known as the Eyes of Wisdom, the clarity of insight through which we see beyond ignorance and confusion. See the "Geek Zone" to learn more.

MORE ABOUT EYES OF THE BUDDHA
Eyes of the Buddha on Nepal Stupa
Stupa with Eyes of the Buddha

Travelers through Nepal, Indian, Burma, Thailand and China are often delighted by the mysterious eyes adorning Buddha Stupas (Buddhist shrine and mediation hall), often facing the four directions.

The eyes, though peering mindfully, are partially closed indicating a simultaneous deep state of introspection. The eyes of wisdom see what is within as well as what is without. The Eyes of the Buddha symbolize the eyes of wisdom and compassion.

Above the pair of eyes is a single dot, another eye, the third eye. Below the pair of eyes is a stylized nose, looking somewhat like a question mark, that is actually the Nepalese number "1" representing the unity of all things, of all life.

Though Buddhist in origin, the Eyes of the Buddha have the power of a universal symbol pointing to the deep wisdom and healing compassion that is the birthright of every human being.
